Louis Abellard, the son of a Prohibition-era bootlegger, was the epitome of evil. Wealthy and a prominent member of his Louisiana community, he was also a bully, a drunk, a rapist and a prominent member of the Ku Klux Klan. Louis’s son Charles wants nothing to do with any of this, but how do you turn your back on money, power and a father who manipulates you like a puppet? How do you escape a Quicksand Paradise? "A thrilling family saga filled with history and riveting drama. I loved it!" --David Bischoff, New York Times Bestselling Author

Quicksand Paradise Mary Keith 9781492232209 Books

Ms. Keith has written a graphic, stirring novel about an embarrassing time in recent American history. Her deep and accurate descriptions of evil took courage and talent to write. The events in this novel will stay with me for many years. The horror of a twisted mind took me through the worst that humanity had to offer. There were times when I felt as if I were looking into the eyes of Lucifer himself. But it is not all dark, for within the development of the characters there is well placed humor. But, to me, the most chilling part is Quicksand Paradise in based on real life. Kudos to Ms. Keith. I hope there will be a sequel.

Quicksand Paradise Mary Keith 9781492232209 Books Reviews

This story of a southern family set during Prohibition-era America is a dark, evocative, and chilling look at the seedy, lurid, and violent underbelly of the America south. The author, Mary Keith, has delved deep into the southern psyche and the criminal mind and pulls no punches with this troubling expose of Prohibition-era America. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Award winning author of War Remains, A Korean War Novel
In exchange for a copy of this book. I should have paid heed to the reviewer who said this book was not for the faint of heart. The main characters are total slimeballs.. I was only able to read a few pages at a time as the depravity is constant in every word spoken, in every action. The heinous acts carried out by the KKK is almost beyond belief except evil really exists and it attracts others with the same mindset. KKK is still alive and active today.
I made myself finish the book but it has no redeeming qualities that would make me want to recommend it to any other person . I think if the author could have brought in the son Charles at the end showing that the circle of evil was indeed broken and something decent happening to Millie, I might feel differently. But all I can say is that a book like this should be rated, and I would have never purchased it. When Louis brutally raped Millie, I felt that the vulgar details went way beyond necessity.
I apologize to the author for the low rating but it is the best I can do.
In 1925, Louis Abellard is 17 years old. He’s fond of booze, girls and cars, and figures that the Abellard money will look after him. His father, Vincent is not unsympathetic, but he figures that Louis needs a college education as well. Oh, and to use condoms so he doesn’t end up with any illegitimate offspring. When Louis is thirty, his father reminds him that he needs to get married. Naturally, Vincent has a wife all selected, and naturally Louis really has no choice. Still, once he has a son - Charles - there’s absolutely no barrier to his impulsive womanising.

‘You’re my only son, Louis, and my one and only hope of passing the Abellard name down to posterity.’

When Vincent dies, Louis inherits the Abellard Imports and Exports Business and the Chateau de Abellard. His wealth makes him a force to be reckoned with in and beyond Abellard Parish. Especially once he joins the local branch of the Ku Klux Klan.

Meantime his son Charlie is growing to adulthood, but he’s a very different man from his father. Louis is disgusted, and tries every trick he can to change Charles.

‘I won’t be lured and ensnared by the trappings of a quicksand paradise.’

Charles is likeable but gullible and his father betrays him in an awful way.

This novel is an uncomfortable reminder of aspects of life in a patriarchal white society in America’s Deep South well into the twentieth century. Not only is Louis Abellard misogynistic and racialist, he’s a bully and a liar. He’s also competitive (in the worst possible way) and violent. He’s one of the most unlikeable, albeit one dimensional, characters I’ve encountered in fiction this year. Ms Keith graphically describes Louis’s depravity, both in relation to his dealings with women as well as within the Ku Klux Klan. This is not a book for those made squeamish by such description.

So, why did I read this book? Ms Keith has portrayed the abuse of power by a privileged white man during the first six or so decades of the twentieth century. While Louis appears almost as a caricature of all the negative aspects of such a life, he’s uncomfortably real. At times, I thought that the graphic description was more than was required to make the point, but perhaps not. And I’m happy to say that I liked the ending.

‘It’s one more legacy - one more helluva legacy.’

Note I was offered, and accepted, a copy of this book for review purposes.

One day, while passing by a Unitarian Church, I saw a quote on the board, "We are responsible for the evil we could have prevented." Evil is like a bacterial infection - it needs fertile grounds to breed. I have no trouble believing that men like Vincent and Louis exist, but I've wondered what had happened in order for them to turn into such moral deviants. The scary thing is that men like Vincent and Louis have mothers and wives, women who are willing to love them in spite of their faults and look the other way. As long as there are women willing to be submissive sham wives and behind-the-scenes mistresses, men like Louis Abelard will exist. I must point out, in a way the relationship between Louis and his father reminded me of the relationship between Miss Havisham and Estella from "Great Expectations". It's almost like Vincent has some hidden vendetta against women, which urges him to turn his son into an aggressive, piggish womanizer. And of course, the cup of evil inevitably reaches the point of saturation, and there is no way except in the opposite direction. Sometimes it takes several generations to neutralize the venom.

The novel is very intense, emotionally authentic, well-researched. It does need a little bit of "love" from the editor. Nothing major. In a few places, the passage of time should have been indicated with a section break, or a new chapter. Other than that, it's an impressive and credible study on the origin of evil.
Ms. Keith has written a graphic, stirring novel about an embarrassing time in recent American history. Her deep and accurate descriptions of evil took courage and talent to write.
